Branoc Hall History
Branoc Hall started life as an old wooden World War 1 army building. It was purchased in the 1920’s by Major Birks, a Branscombe resident, for the village. Specifically in the agreement it stated there must be a snooker table in the hall for village use, which is still there and available to hire today.
In the late 1950’s money was raised by the village to provide a more solid building including the hall, a kitchen, committee room and a snooker room.
In the 1960’s and early 70’s more fundraising took place to replace the wooden building with the hall that is there today including some toilets. The car park was created on what was an old orchard. What is now the playing field, tennis court and playpark was land then donated to the village by Major Tony Hibbert, who was also a resident of Branscombe.
In the 1980’s the snooker room was extended and a doctors surgery room and the public and disabled toilets were created. A lot of money for this renovation was raised from the hugely popular weekly Variety Nights that used to take place during the summer season in the village hall and attracted many locals and visitors.
In 2007 another major refurbishment took place when, after a lot of fundraising and receipt of grants, a ground source heat pump was installed, together with solar panels on the roof, new wooden flooring in the main hall and redecoration.
In 2023 a new pavilion was built by the Branscombe Ravens Cricket Club on the playing field, which has now been given to the Branoc Hall and is also available to hire.
